Finally, a victory for those opposed to Brightline

Many Treasure Coast officials and residents have been fighting All Aboard Florida/Brightline ever since the passenger rail project became part of our collective consciousness in 2014.

During that time, victories have been few and far between.

A series of largely unsuccessful lawsuits and administrative challenges filed by Indian River and Martin counties, as well as Citizens Against Rail Expansion in Florida, may have slowed — but have failed to stop — the Miami-to-Orlando passenger rail project.

Similar defeats have occurred in the Florida Legislature.

In each of the last two sessions, state Sen. Debbie Mayfield filed bills that would have given the Florida Department of Transportation authority to modify certain aspects of Brightline's passenger rail service and impose penalties against the company.
