Letter: Lowering of bridge requires more time than many presume

Regarding the time required to cycle the lowering of the railroad bridge crossing at the Roosevelt Bridge location, a missing point needs to be brought out:
The time the bridge will be down and blocking marine traffic will be much longer than simply the time it will take for the train to cross the bridge.
This is because the bridge must be down and locked far enough in advance for a high-speed train to have time to come to a complete stop before reaching the bridge in case there is a mechanical malfunction of the bridge mechanism.
The forces pushing for the high-speed rail conveniently omitted this.
