Archaeologists at FAU's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute believe they have made a significant find in Vero Beach.

Bones from an extinct species of bison 13,000 to 14,000 years old have been unearthed at the Old Vero Site in Vero Beach, Harbor Branch said.

“This finding is especially significant because of the meticulous documentation that has been involved,” James M. Adovasio, Ph.D., said in a news release. “Along with the fact that bones like this have never been found on land as part of a calculated archaeological effort. Others like this have all been found underwater, in sinkholes or streams.”

The bones were discovered about 10 feet below the surface.

Researchers plans to reveal more about their discovery Thursday.
