Bystanders said pedestrian found dead near train tracks had not been moving for a long time, says official
A Florida East Coast Railway spokesman confirmed Friday that a pedestrian found dead near train tracks in downtown Fort Lauderdale was struck by a train.
A northbound train passed by 109 SW Second Avenue at 7:17 p.m. Thursday, spokesman Bob Ledoux said. A witness later contacted Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue when a body was discovered by the tracks near Bar Stache 1920’s Drinking Den.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene by fire rescue officials at 9:48 p.m.
The train went on to Fort Pierce, where an FEC officer investigated to see whether evidence showed that the train struck a person, Ledoux said.
“The crew evidently did not see the individual,” he said Thursday night. “If crews see somebody, they always apply emergency brakes.”
